Places to Visit
So much to see and do
As well as exploring the towns and cities around the cottages there are some fantastic museums, galleries, churches and stately homes to visit - here are are few ideas...........
We have many lovely museums in the area, the Beverley Treasure House is almost on the door step and there are some lovely "bite-sized" museums in Hull. The Museum Quarter is located in the Old Town area and is home to three museums, all free to enter - the museum of East Yorkshire, Streetlife and Wilberforce House (all about William Wilberforce and his campaign to free the slaves). There is also a deep sea trawler moored alongside - Arctic Corsair but do check as it has limited opening hours. A trip to York (it is only 40 minutes to the park and ride) and you can explore the York Castle Museum or the free to enter National Railway Museum. We have a lot more information in the cottages waiting for you
There are plenty of Stately Homes to visit...
Burton Agnes is a lovely Elizabethan Hall, Sledmere's gardens were designed by Capability Brown and Burton Constable Hall is well worth a visit. Wassand Hall near Hornsea opens selected dates in the year and if you fancy a trip over to Harewood it is easily done in the day. Sewerby Hall has regular events in the grounds, and all these venues have a programme of events across the year ranging from orchid festivals to concerts.
All of these lovely houses have fantastic gardens and there is also Burnby Hall Gardens at Pocklington which has the most impressive display of water lilys.
The main art galleries in the area are the Beverley Art Gallery which is almost on our doorstep and the lovely Ferens Art Gallery in Hull. Ferens has been extended and refurbished in the run up to the 2017 UK City of Culture and will host the Turner Prize in 2017. As well as these large galleries there are many smaller local galleries, the Robert Fuller on the Wolds is one of the foremost wildlife artists in the country. Sledmere has a gallery and the Wolds Village has an art and craft centre. Gallery 49 in Bridlington sells limited edition prints of David Hockney who has immortalised the Wolds landscapes. A good time to visit is October when there is an open studios event with hundreds of artists opening their doors to the public (do check dates if you find this of particular interest).
If churches are your thing we have many fine examples, not just Beverley Minster and York Minster but the Tatton Sykes family at Sledmere have built a network of fine churches across the Wolds. See the in cottage information book for more ideas....
