Dementia friendly holiday cottages

Dementia friendly holiday cottages in Yorkshire Living room at the Barn House - opens onto the courtyard garden

Our five star Gold properties at Broadgate Farm Holiday Cottages can be found in amongst some of the UK’s most beautiful scenery, close to Beverley, in the East Riding of Yorkshire and on the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds.

We are lucky to receive a wide variety of guests to our holiday cottage accommodation and it remains our closely held belief that our properties, along with the local area, should be made as accessible to everyone as possible.

Dementia friendly holiday accommodation

If someone in your party suffers from dementia, you may already have first-hand experience of the challenges associated with finding a dementia friendly holiday cottage in the UK and just how stressful a break away can be for everyone including the carer.

Holiday cottage rentals suitable for someone with dementia

There is no formal accreditation available to indicate that a holiday cottage is suitable for someone with dementia.

However, here at Broadgate Farm Holiday Cottages, we regularly go the extra mile to make sure all our guests are made to feel welcome. And so we are always looking out for any adjustments we can make that can help improve a stay for someone with dementia – and their family. Call us and we can work out together how the cottage may work for you, we can declutter and/or label doors and cupboards if you think it will help. Rugs can be rolled up and put away – just ask.

Take a virtual tour of our cottages before you book

Thanks to impressive camera work, you can take a virtual tour of our cottages (such as this virtual tour of Stables) before you book, so that you can double check that they meet your requirements well in advance.

And even after you have booked your cottage, we know that some people with dementia value revisiting these virtual tours as a way of feeling familiar with the property and prepared for the change in location before they arrive.

Parking right next to your property

We appreciate that for some people with dementia – and their carers – it is much simpler to know that you can always park right next to your holiday cottage for safety and ease of access.

All our cottages have parking right outside the cottage so no need to worry.

Minimal noise and disturbance

Our gardens and grounds are kept beautifully maintained on a regular basis. However, we understand that some guests with dementia may feel unsettled by any unnecessary and unscheduled noise such as lawn mowers.

We can therefore happily rearrange to mow the lawns at a mutually convenient time, for instance, when you are out for the day. Please let us know before arrival.

Ground floor bedrooms and bathrooms

Several of our cottages offer ground floor bedrooms and bathrooms, some with a wet room.

We also have a range of additional mobility aids such as portable toilet frames, shower stools and raised toilet seat, all of which are freely available on request.

Safe, enclosed gardens

Each Broadgate Farm Holiday Cottage has its own enclosed outside space – perfect for taking in the sunshine and fresh air without worrying that someone in your party might wander off.

Whilst not all our garden gates are lockable, the latches are high enough to keep toddlers and small children safe. And if you need more security adding, just let us know in advance.

Pet friendly accommodation

Some guests with dementia have a dog, as a treasured pet and sometimes as an assistance dog.

Broadgate Farm Holiday Cottages welcomes up to two pets per booking. We have yet to meet a dog that doesn’t warmly approve of our underfloor heating!

Visit our farm animals, watch the wildlife

As a working farm, we have some farm animals that visitors to our holiday cottages can enjoy interacting with. These include our freely roaming chickens as well as sheep and pigs. Come at the end of March or into April and you will be among the first to see new born lambs.

We also have a wealth of wildlife including barn owls, tawny owls, buzzards and pheasants, all our cottages are equipped with binoculars and a book about the local wildlife reserves – so there’s plenty to keep everyone occupied!

Private catering in your holiday cottage

We recognise that a stay at Broadgate Farm Holiday Cottages needs to be a break for everyone.  Which is why you might appreciate knowing that it is possible to arrange for someone to deliver outside catering along with a range of menus to suit all occasions and budgets.

Whether you have a special occasion to celebrate or you just fancy a well-deserved rest from cooking, there are options to meet every requirement.

Change to door locks

Recently the fire regulations relating to holiday cottages have changed and we now have to provide keyless exit from the cottage, we have had to change all the door locks so that from the inside of the building all guests can exit with just the turn of a thumb lock. We realise that this may not be ideal for some who have a family member with dementia but we have to comply with the Fire Regulations. Some guests have considered bringing a pressure alarm mat.
