For information about bringing Pets to Broadgate Farm please click here

Whilst you are here you will be able to see our farm animals and the wildlife in the gardens and paddocks that surround the cottages. You can see many of our farm animals from the cottages or areas outside, the hens wander around free range and there are usually sheep in the paddocks. We sometimes have piglets in the building by the Forge cottage, the busiest time is lambing which takes place March/April. Click to find out more about farm holidays at Broadgate Farm.

Wildlife

We also have a lot of wildlife around the farm, a wide selection of birds, rabbits, hares, squirrels and deer can all be seen in the grounds, Steve has been counting the numbers of species of birds we have in the gardens and surrounding paddocks for National Wildlife Week. He has spotted the following:-

3 prs Jenny Wrens, Blue Tits, Great Tits, Hedge Sparrows (dunnock), House Sparrows , Tree Sparrows, Gold Finches, Chaffinch, Green Finches, Bull Finches, Robins, Song Thrush, Mistle thrush, Black Birds (3 prs), Collared Doves, Wood Pigeon & Magpies. We also have a Buzzard, Barn Owls, Little Owls and Tawny Owls in the surrounding paddocks.

We occasionally have Carrion Crows, Sparrow Hawks and as yet we have not seen any Pied Wagtails or Greater Spotted Woodpeckers this year but they were here last year. We now have a resident Buzzard who can often be seen hunting down his prey across the paddocks.

Pheasants roost in the conifers down the side of the driveway and we have set up a Pheasant feeders to encourage them. English partridge are rather fond of our vegetable garden and Barn Owl can be seen covering the paddock in front of the cottages late evenings and early morning, the Barn Owls have raised young here on the farm for the past 4 years and live in the Owl box just by the Cart House. We love living here and try to attract birds by providing nesting boxes and creating the right habitat to encourage good feeding for wild birds.

All the cottages have binoculars and a book about the local wildlife reserves, we have a great calendar about wildlife you can expect to see in East Yorkshire across the year. If you are particularly interested in wildlife Steve is always happy to have a chat and let you know what is happening at the time of your visit. He is out in the fields every day so really in touch with wildlife on the farm.
