At Broadgate Farm, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. Our eco friendly holiday cottages near Beverley combine luxury and comfort with a commitment to protecting the environment and supporting the local area.

We believe tourism should have a positive impact, enhancing
the landscape, encouraging wildlife and supporting the East Yorkshire community
all while giving you a relaxing, memorable stay.

Energy Efficiency

We use energy efficient systems and renewable technologies throughout our cottages to reduce our carbon footprint without compromising your comfort.

From solar energy generation to smart energy use across the farm we’ve made significant reductions in energy consumption. Simple steps like running appliances during the day to help us make the most of the renewable energy we generate on site or just hanging out the washing.

We also buy only zero carbon electricity so making a major reduction in our carbon footprint.

Supporting Wildlife & Nature

Nestled in the Yorkshire Wolds, our farm is a thriving sanctuary for local wildlife. By planting woodlands and installing owl & bird nesting boxes, we have created a safe haven where nature flourishes.

Guests can spot majestic birds of prey, barn owls, deer, and foxes right from their cottage, a perfect escape for nature lovers.

Eco Friendly Heating & Energy

Our wonderful cottages offer year round warmth powered by clean energy. We have used renewable technologies since 2009 and now operate four British made ground source heat pumps. These systems harvest natural heat from under our fields to supply efficient underfloor heating and hot water, generating an impressive 3.9 kWh of clean heat energy for every 1 kWh of electricity input. Solar panels on our barn generate electricity on site.

For extra atmosphere, you can light the wood burning stove in your sitting room with seasoned logs from local managed woodlands included for your stay.

Built for Efficiency

Our cottages may be full of character but they’ve been upgraded to modern energy standards. High levels of insulation, efficient plumbing, smart timers and low energy lighting all help reduce heat loss and energy loss. When converting the buildings we were also very conscious of creating as much natural light as possible to reduce the need for artificial lighting.

These improvements create a comfortable environment while minimising environmental impact. Where buying new materials is unavoidable, sustainability dictates our choice, such as using Accoya wood which carries a 50 year warranty.

Sustainable Hot Water

Hot water comes from our ground source heat pumps with additional support from solar thermal systems in some cottages. Well insulated systems ensure efficient water use while still providing modern bathrooms with mains pressure showers and plenty of hot water for your stay.

Reduce, Reuse & Recycle

We operate on a strict circular model of prevention, reuse and high target recycling. With our extensive recycling programme we recycle over 70% of all waste. Our team hand sorts the general waste bins on site to extract recyclable material, and our specialist waste contract ensures that all waste is used to create power.

Many materials across the cottages have been reclaimed or repurposed including original bricks, lime mortar and timber from the farm helping to preserve the character of the buildings while reducing waste. When larger trees naturally fall on our 19 acre farmstead, the wood is seasoned, milled and repurposed on site into beautiful features like window sills.

Supporting Local Yorkshire Businesses

Regenerative tourism requires strong economic collaboration. We prioritise working with local suppliers and independent family businesses wherever possible, from materials used in the cottages to items in your welcome pack.

With Beverley just minutes away and plenty to explore nearby guests can enjoy a holiday with less travel and support the local East Yorkshire economy. We also actively partner with like minded regional institutions, including an upcoming 2027 joint promotion with The Deep and corporate events alongside Laurel Vines vineyard.

Sustainable Travel

Unusually for a rural farm stay, leaving your car behind is a wonderful and viable option here. Choosing to arrive or explore by public transport, walking, or cycling is a brilliant way to lower your carbon footprint. It also slows down the pace, allowing you to truly soak up the stunning East Yorkshire countryside.

Electric Vehicle Charging Policy

We actively support the transition to low carbon travel, but we must protect our delicate on site micro grid. Guests are strictly prohibited from charging electric or hybrid vehicles using standard domestic cottage sockets. Standard plug charging poses a severe fire risk and can overload our system.

Nearby Charging Options. While we do not have dedicated rapid charging points on the farm, you can easily top up nearby. We provide all guests with an up to date guide to over 50 public charging stations located within 2 miles of the cottages. If you ever find yourself in an absolute emergency low battery situation during your stay, please speak directly to the farm team so we can assist you safely.

Reducing & Offsetting Carbon

Alongside reducing energy use we monitor our carbon footprint. Our zero carbon electricity supply contract helps and we actively inset our footprint by planting trees and farming our land regeneratively. To manage any remaining minor emissions we partner with a UK based, not for profit carbon offsetting organisation.
