Animal updates

October 27th, 2013

We have had a lot of changes on the animals front recently – the larger pigs have moved onto pastures new and we have 4 new cute piglets that we bought at Selby market last Saturday.

Jimmy & Dutch two of last years rams have gone to live near York, we have a new (very expensive!) ram called Oscar but only a few weeks after arrival he developed a lump on his jaw.  The people we bought from sent us a new ram (Tosca) so now we have two! Not sure how Oscar will fare with his lump we will just have to see how he gets on.

It is time for the ram to go in with the ewes so Tosca has been harnessed up (it put a coloured mark on the ewes so we know they have been covered) and he went in this afternoon. The girls seemed to like him they all mobbed him!

Casper is still with us but “retired” – he makes for a rather grumpy pet! Casper was the first sheep we ever got so he will live out the rest of his days with us.

We have also sold our small flock of Shetland sheep – they have gone to West Yorkshire where a farmers son is starting his own flock. Steve has been out and about buying more sheep – we have some ewes and some gimmers (young female sheep that will not lamb next year).he was the first sheep we ever got so he will live out the rest of his days with us.

David Hockney – painting on the Yorkshire Wolds

May 22nd, 2013

Our guests staying in our 6 bedroom High Barn cottage went out walking on the lovely Yorkshire Wolds today and were lucky enough to stumble upon David Hockney painting “en plein air”. Hockney loves the Yorkshire Wolds and often paints outdoors – it was a great thrill for our guests and they resisted the tempation to disturb him leaving him to work in peace.

Hockney lives in Bridlington and in his 2012 exhibition at the Royal Academy 80% of the works on show featured the lovely Yorkshire Wolds. Why not come and see for yourself?  Join us at http://broadgatefarmcottages.co.uk

Double Double Trouble!

April 17th, 2013

We were lucky enough to have a rare set of quads born on the farm at the weekend – 4 nice strong lambs. Mum is feeding them all and we supplement some of them with a bottle. We thought it was all over after three and were very surprised to see another shortly afterwards!

Last night was the awards dinner for the local tourism awards – we won the award for the best self catering provider! We are absolutely delighted, most of the cottages are over 3 years old and we do work hard not just to keep them up to spec but also to improve them for our guests. It is great to have this recognised!
